Evidence ‘cleaned’ after incident at Sydney nightspot

TWO security guards at multi-millionaire hotelier Justin Hemmes’s exclusive Ivy nightspot in Sydney allegedly assaulted a teenager in a basement area of the building, and cleaners destroyed evidence at the crime scene before police arrived.

The alleged incident prompted NSW Police to shut down the Merivale Group-owned nightspot for 72 hours from midnight on Sunday, potentially costing the business hundreds of thousands of dollars.

But lawyers for Mr Hemmes reached a settlement with police yesterday to have the order quashed under certain conditions, including that Ivy security guards wear visible numbered identity cards by September 30.

The company has also agreed to change the security company it employs at its George Street premises.

Security guard and jujitsu champion Emmanouil Ntaras, 30, will appear in Central Local Court today charged with wounding/grievous bodily harm with intent, while another bouncer, aged 24, was also charged with the offence and will appear in court next month.

The alleged incident began after a group of male teenagers was ejected from The Ivy, which is home to 14 food and drink venues, at about 1.30am on Sunday.

An altercation occurred with security guards in which the young people allegedly threw pavers and witches hats from a nearby construction site at the venue and the bouncers.

One 19-year-old male patron was detained by the security guards and was allegedly held down, repeatedly kicked, punched and gagged.

When the teenager’s friends ran away, he was allegedly taken to a basement security area where the assault continued.

Police and ambulance were called to the venue about 2am, but alleged that forensic examination of the area was hampered after hotel management ordered the crime scene be cleaned before officers arrived.

The teenager was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital in the city’s inner-east with serious facial injuries, which are not considered life-threatening.

Merivale spokesman Tim Allerton said the two security staff had been suspended until the conclusion of a full investigation by the police strike force Goldsworthy and Merivale management. “We have initiated a full review of our security protocols and employment policies to ensure the continued safety of our patrons,” Mr Allerton said.

The Ivy serves 10,000 guests a night across 19 bars, eight restaurants and several special-event venues.
