Ex-marine guilty of Sydney nurse Michelle Beets

A FORMER US marine has been found guilty of murdering Sydney nurse manager Michelle Beets.

Walter Ciaran Marsh, 51, had pleaded not guilty to murdering Ms Beets, 57, who was stabbed to death on April 27, 2010, outside her Chatswood home, in Sydney’s north.

The NSW Supreme Court jury retired at 12.20pm (AEDT) on Wednesday and returned its verdict this afternoon.

Ms Beets was the nursing unit manager at Sydney’s Royal North Shore Hospital, where Marsh worked as a nurse until his contract was not renewed in early 2010.

The crown alleged Marsh used a military technique to slit her throat after Ms Beets gave him bad references.

But the defence contended Marsh was not the killer and raised the possibility that Ms Beets might have been stabbed after disturbing a burglar.

The defence also challenged evidence given by Marsh’s wife that he had confessed to the killing.
