Family First wants regional parly sittings

Family First MP Robert Brokenshire wants the South Australian parliament to sit regularly in regional centres around the state.

Mr Brokenshire on Wednesday released a parliamentary reform paper which includes provisions for the state’s upper house to sit in a country centre once every year and for the full parliament to do the same every second year.

The SA lower house sat in Mt Gambier for three days in 2005, while other parliaments around the country have done likewise.

The Queensland, West Australian, Victorian and Northern Territory governments have all sat in regional centres in the past.

“Staging parliament in regional areas gives recognition to the massive economic contribution they make to our economy,” Mr Brokenshire said.

“There’s more than 25 per cent of the state population living out of the Adelaide area, and they deserve to see their parliament in their region for themselves.”
