Augusta — An Upstate, S.C. mom is in critical, but stable condition after her husband said she was diagnosed with a flesh-eating bacteria days after giving birth to twins. Lana Kuykendall was discharged Thursday evening from Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, and was admitted into Greenville Memorial Hospital about 13 hours after coming home to the Upstate, friends said.

Friend Kayla Moon said Kuykendall was having a lot of pain and noticed a spot on her leg. Moon said that spot grew quickly.
“(Kuykendall) just kept getting worse in front of your eyes. She would just get worse and worse and worse. Every minute it was like she was going down,” said Moon. “She was never really able to hold (her babies) and enjoy it.”
Friends said no one is sure how Kuykendall contracted the bacteria.
Friend Krissy Davidson said Kuykendall came through her last surgery well, and for now, she said it seems the bacteria has stopped spreading.
“Right now, just very worried, very upset. Still in disbelief that here is my friend, who just had these two beautiful babies, and now she is intubated upstairs, and not able to enjoy the bonding experience, and enjoy the babies,” said Davidson, outside of GHS. “We’re just asking people to pray for her, and lift her up at this point.”

Moon is helping to care for the twins, Ian and Abigail, and said they’re both healthy at home.
“They’re both gaining weight like they should, and they’re just both really cute kids missing their mommy,” said Moon.
A fund has been set up at GHS Federal Credit Union to help the family with expenses. The fund is under the name Darren Kuykendall, Lana Kuykendall’s husband. Anyone interested can send donations to the credit union at 211 Patewood Drive, Greenville, SC 29615 or call 864-455-7112.
