Flood inquiry to sit in Gympie

The Queensland Floods Commission of Inquiry will hear about the strategies Gympie business owners used to recover quickly from past floods.

Furniture store owner Mandy White is expected to tell the commission on Thursday how past flood experiences helped her prepare her business ahead of the 2011 disaster.

In her statement tendered to the inquiry, Ms White said her business was able to reopen its doors for trading just five days after the January floods.

The inquirywill also hear from Gympie Regional Council staff about planning and flood mapping.

They are expected to tell the inquiry that the flood levels recommended and adopted by council in 2000 will remain unchanged.

The commission held hearings in Bundaberg earlier this week, before sitting in Maryborough, where it heard about the issues that contributed to the devastation there.

About 2.5 million people were affected and 35 died when more than 70 per cent of the state flooded last summer.

The commission, which made 175 recommendations in its interim report in August, will hold just seven more days of hearings before delivering its final report in February.
