Floods isolate 2000 people in NSW

Helicopters have dropped off food and medical supplies to northern NSW properties as floodwaters have isolated more than 2000 residents.

Heavy rainfall across NSW has already killed a three-year-old boy, who drowned early on Saturday afternoon when he was swept into a stormwater drain at Bingara.

The State Emergency Service (SES) said the 1800 residents of the town of Wee Waa, and about 200 rural properties in the Moree area, had been isolated by Sunday afternoon.

“Wee Waa is expected to be isolated until about Thursday or Friday,” an SES spokeswoman told AAP on Sunday.

Four helicopters and one plane have dropped off food and resources on allocated properties in the rural towns.

“We monitor what people’s needs are,” the spokeswoman said.

“We drop off food, water, any medicine, and I know of one area where they flew in a doctor just to make sure everyone was OK.”

Since Tuesday there have been 887 calls for help to the SES, with the majority for tree and roof damage in Sydney.

On Sunday there were 70 calls for help.

“It’s slowed down quite a bit,” the spokeswoman said.

“The advice we’ve got from the bureau is that there is the possibility of more rain around Wednesday or Thursday.

“We don’t expect them to be significant falls.”

Moderate flooding is also expected at Tamworth on the Peel River, and flood warnings are in place for the Macintyre, Macleay and Bellinger rivers.

The weather bureau is predicting that Gwydir River tributaries, at Mehi River and Yarraman Bridge, will peak on Sunday night at 10 metres, the highest level since January 2001.

“We’re keeping an eye on (those rivers),” the spokeswoman said.

Meanwhile, there is no longer a threat on the NSW south coast below Jerrara dam, inland from Kiama, where there were fears that it might overflow and flood properties downstream.

“We put out an evacuation warning yesterday but now that’s been lifted,” the SES spokeswoman said.
