Four boats worth at least $1 million have been destroyed in a fire at Hillarys Boat Harbour early today.

FOUR boats worth at least $1 million have been destroyed in a fire at Hillarys Boat Harbour early today.

Three boats sank  and one was extensively damaged in the blaze.

The fire is thought to have started on one boat moored on C jetty and quickly spread to three nearby vessels.

A significant amount of oil and fuel was evident in the water early this morning after the blaze.

One boatowner, Ron Boucher, arrived at the harbour about 6.30am to find his $200,000 craft burnt to the waterline and totally destroyed.

“It’s a write-off, completely destroyed,” he told ABC radio.

Mr Boucher said the vessel, which he’d owned for about five years, was insured, but he had lost a lot of family memories with the loss of the boat.

Another boat owner said one man had raised the alarm and had bravely gone onto to one of the burning boats to make sure there was nobody trapped or injured when the fire broke out.

FESA spokesman said firefighters were called to the scene about 4am.

He said it was unclear at this stage how the fire started but it appeared nobody was aboard any of the boats.

A FESA fire investigation officer is at the scene and will investigate the circumstances of the blaze this morning.

The Department of Transport is assisting FESA and WA Police with the investigation into the fire.

DoT is continuing to control the spread of pollutants after the four vessels caught fire at Hillarys Boat Harbour.

Oil containment equipment has been deployed to skim the water surface and separate the pollutants from the water.

The DoT is also expecting a salvage vessel to arrive at the harbour later this afternoon to recover the three vessels that sunk following the fire.

The owners of the damaged vessels have been advised of the incident. Members of the public are asked to avoid unnecessary harbour use at this time.

The clean-up process is ongoing and the DoT will continue to work closely with the FESA and the WA Police regarding the incident.

Kelmscott blaze

Police are investigating the torching of a motor home in Kelmscott overnight.

The motor home was situated on Cockram Rd in Kelmscott when it was set alight about 9.30pm.

The fire completely destroyed the vehicle, which was valued at $70,000.

Police were later called to another address in Kelmscott where a 16-year-old boy presented with burns to his face and hands.

A 20-year-old man is helping police with their inquiries into the fire.

The 16-year-old boy is expected to be interviewed also.
