Asked about Miss Trierweiler’s status as France’s unofficial “first lady”, he said: “There is no such status. Valerie wants to keep her professional activity and I understand that. However, she will be at my side when protocol demands.”
Mr Hollande pledged that his first priority as president woud be jobs. “Everything must be done so that employment is as high as possible at the end of my five-year term,” he said, declaring that a plan by PSA Peugeot Citroen to cut 8,000 jobs was “not acceptable”. He also promised France would clean up its public finances, saying: “We will control spending, make savings.”
