Elaine Nile, the wife of NSW Christian Democrat MP, Fred, has died after a three-year fight against liver cancer.

Mrs Nile, 75, died at Calvary Hospital in Sydney at 8.15pm yesterday, a statement from the Reverend Nile said.

Mr Nile said his wife’s liver finally failed as a result of tumours for which she had been treated for three years.

“I thank the Lord Jesus Christ that I was able to pray with Elaine and commit her to the Lord as she quietly passed into the presence of her Saviour,” Mr Nile said.

“Elaine often expressed her strong Christian faith by saying ‘absent from the body, present with the Lord’.”

For almost 15 years Mrs Nile was a NSW Christian Democrat MP in the state’s upper house, before her 2002 retirement due to ill health.

After initial chemotherapy treatment for cancer of the liver, ribs and spine, doctors had told Mrs Nile the disease had disappeared.

However, last year she had to be readmitted to hospital after a recurrence of the liver cancer.
