Free-range consumers egged to lobby MP

Consumers of free-range eggs have been urged to lobby their state MPs over egg production laws, at a town hall meeting in Sydney’s inner west.

More than 120 people gathered at Leichhardt Town Hall on Monday night, which Greens upper house MP John Kaye said was double expectations.

“People were fired up around the issue on free-range eggs,” he told AAP.

A Greens bill to limit free-range egg production to 1500 hens per hectare passed through the state’s upper house in October.

But the measure is opposed by Liberal and Nationals MPs in the lower house.

The Egg Corporation is also against the Greens proposal and wants free range egg producers to be allowed to raise up to 20,000 birds per hectare.

Participants in the meeting were given “action kits” telling people how to lobby their MP to have egg labelling laws changed.

“I’ve had conversations with Liberals that have indicated they’re concerned with free-range egg consumers,” Mr Kaye said.

“Many of these people would understand it’s not electorally sensible to allow the continued exploitation of free-range egg consumers – these people are very angry.”
