GetUp launches gay marriage video

Lobby group GetUp has launched a new video in a bid to get this weekend’s ALP national conference to endorse gay marriage.

The video is shot through the eyes of a person who enters a friendship, falls in love and is later revealed to be a gay man after his partner proposes to him.

It ends with the slogan, partly borrowed from the Whitlam campaign: “It’s Time. End marriage discrimination.”

On Monday afternoon the YouTube clip had clocked up more than 1.5 million views, after hitting the one million mark earlier in the day and having been launched on Friday.

“We’ve been pointing to the national conference as a key moment for the party to reconsider its stance on marriage and pave the way for equality, and with only one week to go, we need to do all we can to ramp up that pressure,” GetUp campaigner Paul Mackay said in a statement.

The campaign is aimed at changing the Marriage Act, which currently defines marriage as between a man and a woman.

The ALP conference is expected to endorse a conscience vote by federal MPs, but such a vote is unlikely to succeed, given the opposition by conservative Labor members and the Liberal-National coalition.

The video will run on Sky on Wednesday and is expected to be broadcast on other channels from Thursday to Saturday, depending on public donations.
