The Recording Academy and The Grammy Foundation announced today that a new Grammy Week event will ensue with their First Annual Grammy Music Educator Award.

The Annual Grammy Music Educator Award program is supported by the National Association of Music Merchandisers (NAMM) Foundation in recognition of the significant role of teachers in musicians’ lives and careers.

The Recording Academy’s President and CEO Neil Portnow will allude to the Annual Grammy Music Educator Award in his speech at the upcoming 55th Annual Grammy Awards.

The First Annual Grammy Music Educator Award will be presented during Grammy Week, 2014.

Kristen Madsen, Senior Vice President of the Grammy Foundation’s MusiCares Foundation explained, “Every Grammy performer that makes it to the Grammy stage had a great music teacher somewhere in his or her life that inspired them, by challenging them and motivating them to keep going.”

“So that’s why the Grammy Awards are uniquely positioned to work with the Grammy Foundation to create this new award, celebrating the great work of music teachers, all over the country, and helping all of us love and enjoy music,” she said.

Ten finalists and one winner will be recognized for their remarkable impact each year. The winning music educator will be flown to Los Angeles to accept the Music Educator Award, and will attend the Grammy Awards, and receive a $10,000 honorarium.

Admissions will open on February 11, 2013, at which time students may nominate their favorite music teacher at www.GrammyMusicTeacher.com.

Nominations are open to current U.S. music teachers, kindergarten through college.

The deadline is April 15, 2013.

Madsen noted that teachers entered will have to fulfill certain criteria, including how many music clinics they have done.
