Greek protesters join pensioner’s funeral

The ceremony was held on Saturday at Athens Municipal Cemetery where the protesters shouted slogans such as, “Bread, Education, Liberty” and “This is not a suicide, this is murder!”

The 77-year-old pensioner and retired pharmacist, Dimitris Christoulas, shot himself in the head next to the Greek Parliament on Wednesday to protest tough austerity measures and economic hardship.

The suicide sparked anger among the Greek public, rekindling anti-austerity protests that have frequently turned violent over the past two years.

According to the text of Christoulas’ suicide note published by local media, he said the government had made it impossible for him to survive on the pension he had paid into for 35 years.

“I find no other solution than a dignified end before I start searching through the trash for food,” read the note.

Greece has been in a financial crisis since 2010 and has relied on international bailout loans ever since.

The European Union and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) have forced the Greek government to implement harsh austerity measures in return for financial aid.

In order to secure a 130-billion-EUR bailout package funded mostly by eurozone member-states and the IMF, the country has had to adopt harsh austerity measures, including massive cuts to its private and public sector wages, pensions, as well as health and defense spending, which have worsened the economic recession, leading to thousands of job losses.
