Greens welcome aged-care reform

The Greens will support aged-care reform provided it does not involve cuts to entitlements, party leader Christine Milne says.

“We absolutely need reform of aged care, and we need to be listening carefully to the sector, but we don’t want to see cuts to aged care dressed up as reform,” Senator Milne told reporters in Sydney on Friday.

Her comments came as Prime Minister Julia Gillard unveiled a $3.7 billion plan to overhaul the aged-care system to increase in-home care options, provide more support for dementia sufferers and attract more workers to the sector.

Senator Milne said helping people stay in their own homes and out of the nursing-home system for as long as possible was a community priority, not just Labor policy.

“We want people to be able to be supported at home, with as many services as can be provided to do that,” she said.

Senator Milne said she was eager to see more detail from the Gillard government on means-testing for aged care.

Labor’s so-called Living Longer Better Plan, announced in response to last year’s Productivity Commission report, will start on July 1 this year and the funds will be spent over five years.
