Gunman’s murder rampage

TWO men are dead and a critically injured woman is fighting for her life in the Royal Hobart Hospital after an apparent murder-suicide rampage on the North-West Coast yesterday.

A neighbour called 000 after hearing gunshots in Watkinson St, Devonport, about 7.45am.

Inspector Rob Gunton said a Devonport man in his 40s had arrived in the normally peaceful street in a four-wheel-drive utility.

The man then shot another man and a woman, also from Devonport, in the chest with a rifle before turning the weapon on himself.

Both men were dead when police arrived at the scene.

The woman was initially taken to the North-West Regional Hospital before being transferred to Hobart.

Insp Gunton said she was in a critical condition with gunshot wounds.

A Royal Hobart Hospital spokeswoman said last night the woman remained in a critical condition.

The incident occurred outside the Watkinson St home.

One man’s body was covered by a sheet for several hours while forensics officers and detectives conducted their investigations.

Insp Gunton said the firearm was registered but he would not reveal its calibre, saying ballistic examinations were still being conducted.

The number of shots fired had not been established.

“That is still subject to investigation – accounts of witnesses vary,” he said.

Police have the weapon in their possession. An officer was seen carrying at least two rifles from the area.

Insp Gunton said none of three victims was a resident of the Watkinson St house where the incident occurred.

He said the family was not known to police and there was no history of domestic violence.

Police did not believe alcohol or drugs were involved.

When police arrived, the injured woman was conscious but not able to communicate because of the extent of her injuries.

It was not yet known whether a struggle had occurred inside the house before the shootings.

“The investigation is in the preliminary stages and once we know more we’ll be able to let you know that,” Insp Gunton said.

Police said there were two women, one of whom was an owner of the house, and a female child inside the house at the time of the shootings.

They did not witness what happened.

“The young child is presently with her father and is obviously traumatised and we will facilitate counselling for her,” Insp Gunton said.

Interviews were conducted yesterday with the residents of the house.

A coronial investigation is under way.

Insp Gunton said police had yet to notify the families of the victims about the shooting incident.

A resident of Watkinson St who did not want to be named said she had been watching television when she heard five or six gunshots about 7.45am. “It was very loud and echoed,” she said.

“It was just really brief and there was just a noise that sounded like a female.”

A young man said he had heard four or five gunshots but had heard no car.

The neighbour thought to have called police would not comment.

The gunshots interrupted a sunny spring day in one of Devonport’s most peaceful areas.

The home where the shootings occurred is in a cul de sac at the northern end of Watkinson St which is on the western side of the city.

Opposite the cul de sac is lush parkland across which the Don River Railway runs alongside the Don River.

In the distance, towards Ulverstone, there was rural bliss yesterday with an irrigator watering the rich red soil of the North-West Coast.

The modest homes in the cul de sac contrast with large homes further up Watkinson St where there is a view over the Don River and Coles Beach.

One resident said she heard five or six gunshots which echoed around the quiet bush area. She did not hear an identifiable voice or yelling.

“There was just a sound which did not seem like a man,” she said.

Police erected a large yellow tarpaulin around the cul de sac to shield the men’s bodies from the public and media. Officers blocked several surrounding streets as forensic investigations were done.

A white sheet was on the road for several hours.

A four-wheel-drive vehicle was parked, as if hurriedly, on the nature strip opposite the house where a man and woman, two other females and a small child were spending their Saturday morning.
