IT was a late night run to Hungry Jacks, just a six-minute drive from their western Sydney home.

But the trip to the fast food outlet on Tuesday night ended in tragedy for Kemps Creek 14-year-old Zac Trifogli, who died when the car driven by his 18-year-old stepbrother crashed into a concrete pole and two trees.

Zac was travelling in the front seat of the Holden Commodore when it grazed a metal guard rail on Fifteenth Ave, Rossmore — which is a 60km/h zone — before it swerved on to the other side of the road.

It narrowly missed an oncoming vehicle before it smashed into the pole, uprooted two trees and flipped, landing on its side about 30m away.

By yesterday morning the wrecked vehicle had been cleared, but debris remained strewn across the paddock — the passenger side door now a twisted piece of metal.

Police believe Zac bore the brunt of the impact when the car hit the two trees. The driver — known as “Zo” — escaped with minor injuries and was taken to Liverpool Hospital in a stable condition. He was released a few hours later.

Zac’s brother Josh was the first of almost a dozen relatives to arrive on the scene yesterday.

“He was my only brother, I can’t believe he’s gone,” he said as he surveyed the debris.

“He was just finishing Year 9 soon and pretty much top of his class.”

Josh posted a photo of Zac on Facebook yesterday with the comment: “R.I.P to my beautiful fratello bello” (Italian for beautiful brother).

Friends took the opportunity to pay tributes to the teenager on the social networking site, leaving comments, well-wishes and condolences.

Other family members also flocked to the scene to lay flowers and leave cards, shaking their heads in disbelief at the remnants of the car strewn across the grass.

One relative, who asked not to be named, said he was in shock after learning the “innocent” teenager had been killed.

“He was a good kid, there wasn’t a bad bone in his body,” the relative said.

“These kids just don’t realise what they are doing until something like this happens.

“Unfortunately he’s the innocent one. He had no control over the driver or what he was doing behind the wheel.”

Police have not laid any charges against the 18-year-old driver but questioned him while he was being treated in hospital.

Investigations are continuing and NSW police will prepare a report for the coroner.
