TWO historic railway workshop buildings, earmarked for private redevelopment, have been destroyed in a spectacular fire at Ipswich in Queensland.
The blaze, which could be seen from some Brisbane suburbs, started about 6.30pm (AEST) yesterday and took six fire crews 90 minutes to control, says the Department of Community Safety (DCS).
No-one was injured, but both buildings were destroyed.
Councillor Paul Tully said the buildings were built about 150 years ago.
“They are old administration buildings and they were part of the Ipswich rail museum,” Mr Tully told ABC Radio.
“They are now in private hands as part of a redevelopment site and there had been reports of squatters in the buildings.
“The rail workshops go back to the 1860s and it’s an historic part of Ipswich.
“It’s another part of Ipswich’s history which has gone unfortunately because of the fire.”
Authorities will investigate the cause of the blaze.
