HIV higher in African-American women

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 1.2 million Americans are living with HIV — an increase of about 13 percent — with approximately 50,000 Americans being infected each year.

Moreover, a separate ISIS study suggests the infection rate among African-American women in the US is five times higher than previously reported by the CDC.

The study reveals African-American women are confronted with various social, economic and educational factors setting them at greater risk to contract the illness.

“Women in society, in general and even in America, are challenged by a number of factors that influence both their health and health outcomes: economic injustices, sexual roles and stereotypes, and the pervading challenges around men’s access to power,” said Dr. Marjorie Hill, chief executive officer of the Gay Man’s Health Crisis in New York.

The study also shows that approximately 20 percent of all Americans infected with HIV are not aware they have the virus and, therefore, risk spreading it to unsuspecting partners.

“Part of the reason is because there’s rampant denial,” said Dr. Hill, while referring to the stigma attached to the illness.

At some point in their life approximately 1 out of 16 black men will be diagnosed with HIV, while 1 out of 32 black women will be infected.

African-Americans represent about 14 percent of the US population but account for nearly about 50 percent of new HIV infections.

Experts say poor and minority neighborhoods in the US are mostly affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic mainly because many resources and clinics are limited or not available.
