Hossam Bahgat released: EIPR

TCP : Egyptian investigative journalist and founder of the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR) Hossam Bahgat has been released from the Cairo-based Intelligence headquarters three days after being detained over charges of “publishing false news harms the national interest,” the EIPR announced Tuesday.

Intelligence summoned Bahgat Sunday to probe him on an article, published Oct. 14 in Mada Masr, discussing a military trial of 26 officers for plotting “regime change” with the Brotherhood, according to his lawyers.

“Hossam Bahgat has just been released. He just called us and he is on his way home. Thank you all for your support,” EIPR posted on official Twitter account.

Bahgat’s Lawyer Nagad al-Borei told Youm7 that his client was released pending investigations, saying “his release does not mean that the investigations are completed, but the case will be closed soon.”

Borei added that the release “rectified a situation” as Egyptian law prevents detention of journalists over publishing false news.

In Egypt, publishing anything about the military is prohibited without permission; most major outlets confine their coverage to statements issued by top brass, and have correspondents accredited to military coverage, who relay statements from military spokespersons.

A protest in solidarity with Bahgat, scheduled to be staged Tuesday afternoon, outside the Egyptian embassy in Tunisia has been cancelled in light of the release.
