THE long-running saga involving the Health Services Union and NSW MHR Craig Thomson is damaging Prime Minister Julia Gillard “because it’s like a lingering odour that just won’t go away”, according to state Opposition Leader John Robertson.

Mr Robertson said yesterday the scandal was “damaging” for the Prime Minister and didn’t help Labor’s cause.

“It is damaging there’s no question about that because people keep talking about it,” Mr Robertson said. “But if you were actually writing this script or if you were Julia Gillard and watching this play out you would never have made it play out this way because it’s like a lingering odour that just won’t go away.”

“Unfortunately Fair Work Australia has taken an inordinate amount of time to actually get to this and now we’ve got a report that won’t be released for probably at least another month, if not six weeks. All these things don’t help the cause of Labor and don’t help Julia Gillard but in the end, like it or not, you wouldn’t choose it to be this way, but that’s the way Fair Work Australia has dealt with it and that’s part of the problem.”
