Immigration ‘denies visa to autistic woman’

A London policeman and his family have reportedly been denied a visa to move to Australia because his 25-year-old stepdaughter is autistic.

Sergeant Peter Threlfall has been offered a job in Ceduna, South Australia, but the Immigration Department ruled stepdaughter Sarah’s disability would place a burden on health and community services.

The decision comes despite Sarah working two part-time jobs and not seeking any assistance from the government, the Advertiser reports.

Sarah, who volunteers for the Scout and Guide movements, had plans to study hairdressing in Australia.

“Sarah is not a drain on UK resources and would not have been on Australia,” Sgt Threlfall said.

He had spent about $8000 and six months going through the recruitment process and had missed out on a promotion in London because of the planned move.

The Immigration Department confirmed Sarah had not met the legislated health requirement to be granted a visa.
