Increase in reports of suspicious men in Gold Coast may be kids ‘jumping at …

GOLD Coast police say a marked increase in reports of men acting suspiciously might stem from young children being spooked by warnings of stranger danger.

The region’s crime coordinator has attributed many such incidents in recent weeks, including reports of attempted abductions, to children “jumping at shadows”.

Detective-Superintendent David Hutchinson says thorough investigations have found nothing to back up media reports of attempted abductions on the streets of the tourist strip.

“There’s no evidence of that,” he told reporters today.

“All the incidents that have been reported are not connected and there’s no apparent link.

“The vehicles are different. We have white utilities, orange utilities, yellow four-wheel drives, blue vans, so there’s no apparent link between the vehicles or the descriptions of the persons.”

Supt Hutchinson said media reports of someone trying to abduct children had triggered a sense of unease.

“There’s a lot of media about it at the moment,” he said.

“The schools are actively pushing the stranger danger issue as well. A lot of information is going out to children and children have vivid imaginations.”

Some children had been frightened to cross a street because they saw two men sitting in a parked car, and others had panicked because someone simply looked at them.

“You could suggest that the children are jumping at shadows, perhaps,” Supt Hutchinson said.

“As I say, a lot of them are unsubstantiated and some are being withdrawn as being false.”

But he stressed that parents with concerns must report them to police immediately.

“History shows that children are abducted off the streets. That does happen,” he said.

“So every complaint will be treated seriously and investigated thoroughly.”
