Incredible Foodie Road Trip Draws to a Close

Off-grid farming and cave dwelling; dairy cows with a retirement plan; trapping and killing feral pigs; eating invasive iguana in Florida.

At first glance, the list of episodes from the Perennial Plate‘s incredible road trip around America might sound like yet another “extreme” cooking show focusing on the weird and oddball side of culinary culture.

But nothing could be further from the truth.

While Daniel and Mirra have taken us into the gardens, farms, and kitchens of people many of us would be unlikely to meet otherwise, their focus has always been on how food brings us together. Yes, one person might enjoy snacking on insects, or Canadian goose burgers, while another is a hardcore vegetarian. But we all eat. And we all have an interest in keeping our food system healthy.

That, for me at least, is the big lesson. But enough preaching to the converted. Here’s a look back on a remarkable journey.
