Indonesian Foreign Minister Inaugurates Honorary Palestinian Consul in Jordan

nsnbc : Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi inaugurated Maha Abu-Shusheh as Indonesian Honorary Consul to Palestine in the Jordanian capital Amman on Sunday. Israeli authorities reportedly denied the Foreign Minister access to the interim Palestinian capital Ramallah as well as to the Gaza Strip. Maha Abu-Shusheh is based in the West Bank city Ramallah.

Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi was supposed to travel to Ramallah for the inauguration. Israeli authorities reportedly denied her and an accompanying delegation access to Palestine. Marsudi was scheduled to meet Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Malki in Ramallah. The Palestinian Foreign Ministry issued a statement, saying:

“In recognition of the historical and unique ties between Palestine and Indonesia and this country’s supportive stance with the Palestinian people, al-Malki traveled to Amman to meet with his Indonesian counterpart.”

Israeli authorities reportedly denied the Indonesian delegation access to Palestine because Foreign Minister Retno refused to meet with Israeli officials in Jerusalem. Indinesia and Israel have no formal diplomatic relations. The world’s most popular Muslim-dominated country, Indonesia, is consequent supporter of Palestine’s struggle for independence.

Indonesian governments have previously announced that the country only would establish formal diplomatic relations with Israel when Israel ends its occupation of Palestinian territories.

Israel’s denial of access to Palestine for the Indonesian Minister comes against the backdrop of increased Israeli oppression against Palestinian media and journalists and a stark response to the international Boycott Divestment Sanctions campaign against Israel. Tel Aviv restricted the  import of goods from five Palestinian companies to Jerusalem.

On Saturday Minister Retno met the chairperson of the Indonesian – Jordanian Parliamentarian Friendship, Madallah Taranweh, at the residence of the Indonesian Ambassador in Amman. The two discussed, among others, religious tolerance and the roles of women in government and parliament. On March 6 – 7 Indonesia hosted the Fifth Extraordinary OIC Summit on Palestine and Jerusalem in the Indonesian capital Jakarta.
