Rouhani Slams Iran’s Sharia Thought Police But…

Fahwad Al-Khadoumi (nsnbc) : Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani slammed undercover “morality police” in the capital Tehran for reporting on citizens whose demeanor is inconsistent with religious doctrine; like women not wearing an appropriate hijab or youth playing loud music in their cars. Rouhani stressed that the agents have no authority to detain anyone and “only can report violations via SMS to police stations”. Understandably, Rouhani’s moderation is not exactly comforting for those who are cognizant of the fact that only being reported or harassed may have an impact on your career, business relations, and your freedom, to say the least.

Rouhani_IranRouhani’s words of “moderation” came amidst growing concerns about some 7,000 undercover agents in the Iranian capital Tehran whose job description includes reporting women who are not wearing an appropriate hijab, youth who play loud music in their cars, or other behavior and demeanor that is regarded as “inconsistent with Islam”.

First of all, say critics, including prominent Islamic scholars, there is nothing in the Quran that dictates the wearing of a hijab. In fact, it is largely a 20th century invention of the Muslim Brotherhood and similar organizations who launched the “tradition” as part of their strategy of waging cultural jihad. Both President Hassan Rouhani and Tehran’s police chief asserted that these agents were not authorized to arrest anyone.

Rouhani commented via the ISNA news agency, saying that “Our first duty is to respect people’s dignity and personality. God has bestowed dignity to all human beings and this dignity precedes religion.” However, Iranian police are part of Iran’s armed forces and supervised by Iran’s Supreme Leader, currently Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. It is, however, the Interior Ministry that largely stands for the implementation of policy with regard to the operations of Iran’s religious “thought police”.

There have been numerous reported incidents of everything from harassment to arrests of women who were non-compliant with regard to the hijab, women wearing colorful clothes, or women who were not covering enough of their body. Numerous men have been harassed and detained for behavior that was considered inconsistent with “Islamic law”. Sexual harassment of women is in many cases brushed off as a non-offense, caused by the women’s own demeanor, non-compliant and “tempting” dress, etc..

The fact that Rouhani underpins that these agents have no authority to arrest anyone is not exactly reassuring for those who have no plan to succumb to moral religious dictates and Tehran’s thought police. “Only being reported to the police via SMS” a few times can have a devastating impact on the targeted person’s career, and tends to draw unwanted and unwarranted attention from police officers. In that regard, Iran is not much different from, let’s say Germany and other countries where “snitching” to assure the security of the State and the constitution is a source of income for thousands.
