Investigation into Crash of Flight KGL9268 in Egypt in Final Stages: Putin

nsnbc : The investigation into the crash of the Russian Kogalmavia Airlines (Metrojet) Airbus 321 in Egypt’s Sinai peninsula on October 31 is in the final stages, said Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Antalya, Turkey on Monday.

KGL9268 wreckage_Egypt_North SinaiRussian President Vladimir Putin made the statement to the press during a meeting with Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi on the sidelines of the G20 Summit.

Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, for his part, expressed his condolences on behalf of him and the entire people of Italy. Renzi stressed that countries must, above all, show unity in combating terrorism.

The Kogalmavia (Kogalymavia) operated Airbus 321 on Flight KGL9268 crashed in Egypt’s North Sinai province 23 minutes after takeoff from the Egyptian Red Sea tourist resort Sharm el-Sheikh. The flight was bound for St. Petersburg, Russia. All 224 passengers and crew on board the airliner perished. Among them at least 25 children.

Egyptian and Russian aviation authorities stated that the plane suddenly lost speed and altitude at about 28,000 – 31,000 ft (depending on reports). Data retrieved from the cockpit voice recorder reportedly revealed a sudden loud sound (not exactly specified) before the recorder stopped functioning. Investigators have thus far reported that the plane broke up in the air.

The in flight breakup of the plane as well as an (unconfirmed) statement, allegedly posted on social media by a group linked to Daesh, a.k.a. ISIS or ISIL led to speculations whether the plane was shot down by a surface to air missile or by a bomb.

The tragedy has led Russian, Dutch, French, German and other States’ airlines to suspend flights to Egypt or to Sharm el-Sheikh, leading to a substantial drop in Egypt’s 4th quarter tourist industry. Earlier this month the investigative team urged media to refrain from unfounded speculations and from misrepresenting official statements.

MH17_DSB_WreckageIt is, however, noteworthy that Flight KGL9268 was the second airliner since July 2014 to crash in a region where a conflict is in progress. On July 17, 2014 Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 crashed in eastern Ukraine.

One of the main conclusions of the investigation into the crash of Flight MH17 was that dozens of operators as well as the Ukrainian government had failed to recognize the risk associated with operation flights above an area where a conflict is in progress.

Egypt has been combating Daesh linked insurgents in North Sinai since the ouster of former President Mohamed Morsi in 2013. Most prominent among these insurgencies is Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis (ABM) which is fighting for a Wilayat Sinai (State / or Caliphate of Sinai).

nsnbc international calls on the Russian and Egyptian authorities to make data from the investigation available to independent media. These data include certified copies of the recording from the cockpit voice recorder, certified copies of the comma separated variable (CSV) file from the flight data recorder and other evidence.

Taking into account the geopolitical implications of a possible act of terrorism as well as those produced by highly speculative media reports, it is only full disclosure of evidence to the press that can satisfy the flying public’s right to information – and bring closure to the bereft families and loved ones of the 224 victims. That is, regardless whether the plane crashed due to a technical malfunction, an act of terrorism, or any other reason.
