Iran backs UN to end militarism in Syria

“The Islamic Republic of Iran agrees with the Commission of Inquiry [on the fact] that militarism is not the sole solution to the crisis in Syria,” Iran’s Permanent Representative to the UN’s European Office in Geneva Seyyed Mohammad-Reza Sajjadi said in a statement on Monday.

The statement also warned against the spillover of the Syria unrest into the entire region, emphasizing that the spread of conflicts as a result of the growing presence of foreign fighters in Syria is one of the main concerns of regional states.

The Iranian envoy emphasized on the continuation of efforts to organize “comprehensive and meaningful” talks among all groups which are pursuing legitimate objectives.

Independent United Nations human rights investigators presented a new report on Monday which urges a political solution to what has become an increasingly militarized conflict.

“There is an urgent need for a sustained diplomatic initiative to put an end to the violence and the suffering of the Syrian population,” the Chair of the CoI, Paulo Pinheiro, told the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.

He warned of “political, economic and social devastating implications” for Syria, the region and the world if the national, regional, and international actors failed to find a solution to the unrest and stop the agony of millions of civilians.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011. Many people, including large numbers of Army and security personnel, have been killed in the violence.

The Syrian government has said that the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and that a very large number of the militants operating in the country are foreign nationals.
