‘Iran role essential to Syria solution’

Igor Korotchenko, editor-in-chief of the Russian Natsionalnaya Oborona (National Defense) magazine, told Arabic-language Russia Today news network on Sunday that Washington and London’s opposition to the involvement of Tehran in a future conference on Syria will further complicate attempts aimed at finding a solution to the Syrian crisis.

He stressed that the US is engaged in a smear campaign against both Syria and Russia, dismissing reports that Moscow and Washington “are continuing to talk about a post-Assad transition strategy.”

Russia recognizes Bashar al-Assad as Syria’s authorized and legitimate leader, Korotchenko pointed out.

The Russian political analyst further said any talks on the Syrian crisis must include Assad, adding that Moscow has detailed information that Qatar, Turkey and the US are funneling arms to rebels and terrorist groups in Syria.

Countries like Britain, France, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the US have hatched plots against the Syrian government and are seeking to topple Assad and plunge Syria into a full-scale civil war, Korotchenko said.

On June 15, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov emphasized that Iran must be among the participants in an international conference on Syria that Moscow has proposed.

During a press briefing on June 9, the Russian foreign minister proposed that an international conference on Syria be held with the aim of supporting the peace plan brokered by UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan.

“We want this event to be effective. In order to be effective, all the sides with any influence on the sides in the Syrian conflicts should be represented there. Iran is one such country,” he pointed out.

Lavrov also said that although the truce in Syria has been shaky, there is “no alternative” to the Annan plan and suggested that the plan be made more “detailed” and “specified.”

Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March 2011.

While the West and the Syrian opposition accuse the government of the killings, Damascus blames ”outlaws, saboteurs and armed terrorist groups” for the unrest, insisting that it is being orchestrated from abroad.
