Iran, Turkmenistan eye enhanced ties after JCPOA

Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Asia and Pacific Affairs Ebrahim Rahimpour and Turkmenistan’s Foreign Minister Rasit Meredow in a meeting talked about ways to promote cooperation between Tehran and Ashgabat in political and economic fields and in the affairs pertaining to the Caspian Sea.

Highlighting Iran’s elevated position after termination of anti-Tehran sanctions under the nuclear deal known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Rahimpour underlined that relations with Turkmenistan on bilateral and regional issues will grow in the post-JCPOA era.

For his part, Meredow congratulated Iran on its “big diplomatic success” to clinch the nuclear deal with world powers, voicing his country’s readiness to broaden political, cultural and economic ties with Iran and to carry out joint development projects.

The JCPOA, which was finalized by Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) in July last year, took effect on January 16.

Based on the agreement, all nuclear-related anti-Iran sanctions have been removed.
