Iran under attack as EU mulls fresh sanctions

Sanctions are continuing to pile up on Iran with the EU due to announce an unprecedented, bloc-wide ban on Iranian oil on Monday. Europe hopes the measures will make Tehran rethink its nuclear program, which Israel and its allies see as a threat.

Western leaders have long insisted that Iran is on a dangerous path towards acquiring nuclear weapons. Tehran has consistently denied such ambitions, saying its nuclear industry is civilian, not military.

Foreign ministers of the 27 EU member states are meeting in Brussels to discuss the sanctions. The talks come amid a sovereign debt crisis which has gripped the bloc for almost two years. Some countries, such as France, want sanctions to be implemented as soon as possible. Others, including debt-laden Greece, are asking for a 12-month stay of execution. If members agree on a middle-ground compromise, sanctions can be expected to come into force between three and eight months from now.

The proposed EU embargo comes on the heels of tough new US sanctions approved earlier this month. Taken together, the sanctions will remove 2.6 million barrels of oil from international markets, driving oil prices up and adding to the overall instability of the world economy.

The proposed EU sanctions package could also target the activities of a number of Iranian companies, individuals and financial institutions.

With all that, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton says she expects the EU to pressure Iran back to the negotiation table.
