Iran urges cooperation in P5+1 talks

“We regard the policy of cooperation and dialogue suitable for the settlement of the issues and thoroughly defend the rights of the Iranian nation, and are prepared for negotiations and cooperation,” Mehmanparast said in a Friday interview in Serbia, ahead of the talks between Iran and the P5+1 – Russia, China, Britain, France, the US plus Germany – on Saturday.

He argued that one reason why the Iran-P5+1 talks achieved less favorable results in the past was the lack of a cooperative attitude on the part of the countries negotiating with Iran, which sought their policy of pressure and intimidation.

They intended to exert “unreasonable pressure” on Iran as they assumed that they could change Tehran’s nuclear energy program by means of sanctions, the Iranian top diplomat pointed out.

Mehmanparast noted that if the P5+1 group respects the rights of the Iranian nation and refrains from confrontation and unreasonable demands, the talks will significantly make headway.

Iran and the P5+1 are scheduled to resume a fresh round of multifaceted talks in the Turkish city of Istanbul on Saturday.

The Iranian delegation, headed by secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, Saeed Jalili, arrived in Istanbul Friday morning.

Iran and the P5+1 have agreed to hold the first round of their fresh multifaceted talks in Istanbul and conduct the second round of the negotiations in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, with the date to be announced at the end of the Istanbul meeting.

Tehran and the P5+1 have held two rounds of talks, one in Geneva in December 2010 and another in Istanbul in January 2011.

Iran has repeatedly declared that as a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency, it is entitled to the peaceful use of nuclear technology.
