Instability, insecurity and killings are the results of arming rebel groups in Syria, Mehmanparast said in an interview with Croatia’s state TV on Wednesday.
“Sending arms to Syria must be stopped,” he said, adding that Iran supports a peaceful solution to the Syrian crisis and opposes any foreign interference in the country.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman called on both sides to the Syrian unrest to show self-restraint so that negotiations would take place in an appropriate atmosphere.
Syria has been the scene of unrest since mid-March, 2011.
The West and the Syrian opposition accuse the government of killing protesters. But Damascus blames ”outlaws, saboteurs and armed terrorist groups” for the unrest, insisting that it is being orchestrated from abroad.
