Ireland mulls early Palestine recognition

Irish Foreign Minister Charlie Flanagan says his country is considering an early recognition of Palestine as an independent state, despite opposition from Israel.

The Irish foreign minister made the remarks in parliament in the capital, Dublin, on Wednesday after lawmakers approved a non-binding motion regarding Palestinian statehood.

“Achieving and recognizing a Palestinian state has always been the objective of the Irish government. Everything we do in the Middle East is directed towards that aim,” Flanagan said.

The motion agreed by Irish lawmakers called on the government to “officially recognize the State of Palestine, on the bases of the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as the capital, as established in United Nations resolutions.”

Although the government is not bound to follow the motion, Flanagan said Dublin has “always supported a viable two-state solution and will continue to support that in any manner and by any means.”

Ireland is the fourth European Union country after Spain, Britain, and France, to embrace similar motions calling for the recognition of Palestine since October.

On October 30, Sweden officially recognized Palestine as a state, prompting Israel to recall its ambassador from the European country.

Israel occupied the Palestinian territories of East al-Quds (Jerusalem), the Gaza Strip, and the West Bank during the Six-Day War of 1967. Tel Aviv withdrew from Gaza in 2005, but its forces have been carrying out regular deadly forays into the sliver ever since the pullout.

In May 2014, almost all countries in the United Nations voted in favor of Resolution 58/292 stipulating that the borders of a Palestinian state should be based on the pre-1967 borders.

Tel Aviv, however, has refused to return to the 1967 borders and is unwilling to discuss the issue of al-Quds.
