Irene Papas: The last goodbye to Greece’s legendary actress (PHOTOS)

Relatives and friends bid farewell to the great actress Irene Papas at the Holy Church of Agios Georgios in Chiliomodi, Corinthia.

She will be buried in the village cemetery, next to her beloved parents. Her family requested that instead of wreaths, for money to be allocated to the “Theotokos” foundation for the support of children with special needs or to the Actor’s House.

Her four nephews were there: Manousos Manousakis, son of Despina’s sister, actor Aias Manthopoulos, son of sister Evangelia, and Melia and Kassios.

“I want to always remember that I am from Chiliomodi”, the great actress who was born on September 3, 1926 in Chiliomodi, Corinth as Irene Lelekou, said in an interview with ERT. She spent her last few years there.

In the village of the descendants of Priam, the theatre opened this summer, which she, out of modesty, did not accept to be named after her. Residents say that it was very important that the “Irene Papas theatre” was inaugurated while the 96-year-old was alive.

It is located on Nikitara Hill and hosted the 18th Panhellenic Amateur Theatre Festival, with a capacity of 800 seats.

The funeral was attended by – among others – the Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni, George Lianis, Manoussos Manousakis, Nikos Verlekis and Aias Manthopoulos.
