‘Islam to emerge as global power pole’

“The future world is a multi-polar world and the Islamic Ummah (nation), which enjoys vast geographical spread and rich underground resources, is definitely one of its poles,” said Ali Akbar Velayati at a conference on Islamic Awakening in the southern Iranian city of Shiraz on Saturday.

Velayati made reference to the spreading wave of popular uprisings across the Arab world, adding, “In every country that Islamic Awakening has occurred and the people achieved victory, they have returned to Islam and reconciliation with Israel and the US makes no sense for them.”

The top Iranian official argued that such awakening, which has its roots in Iran’s Islamic revolution, has opened up a new prospect for the Muslim Ummah and that even the Iranian nation did not expect its struggles to become so inspirational for the Arab world.

The people of Egypt, Tunisia, Bahrain, Libya and Yemen insist that they want freedom based on Islamic values and this signifies religious democracy, Velayati pointed out.

Since early 2011, a tide of revolutions and popular uprisings has spread across the Arab countries in the Middle East and North Africa.

The developments have so far led to the downfall of three US-backed authoritarian regimes in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya.

Many observers contend that the Islamic Awakening movement has been inspired by Iran’s Islamic Revolution in 1979.
