Israel tells vacationers to leave Sinai

On Saturday, the Israeli National Security Council’s counterterrorism bureau raised the alert level for the Sinai from an advisory to a warning, citing intelligence about plans for an “imminent” attack.

The new advisory called on Israelis to contact any friends or relatives vacationing in the Sinai and inform them of the threat, Haaretz reported.

The Sinai Peninsula, a popular getaway for Israeli vacationers, is regarded as more dangerous for Israelis since the ouster of Egypt’s pro-Israeli dictator Hosni Mubarak last year.

Early in April, a gas pipeline transporting fuel to Israel and Jordan was targeted by a bomb attack, prompting Egypt’s military rulers to tighten security in the Sinai.

It was the 14th time the pipeline had been targeted since last February.

Egypt could deploy more military units to the vast desert region, in addition to police and border guards, if the 1979 Egyptian-Israeli peace treaty were amended to allow more troops in the area.

The number of Egyptian forces in the demilitarized Sinai is regulated by the 1979 accord, which bans the deployment of military forces in the section of the Sinai bordering Israel.

In August, Egypt deployed 2,000 more soldiers and police in the area, with Israeli approval, following an outbreak of violence, when eight Israelis were killed in an attack on an Israeli bus near Eilat, close to the Egyptian border.
