Israeli MK: burning Palestinian boys is not act of terror

Days of Palestine, Jerusalem –Israeli Knesset Member (MK) Bezalel Smotrich considered on Thursday burning Palestinian children is not an act of terror.

Smotrich published a column in the B’Sheva weekly newspaper, saying that the attacks carried out by extremist Israeli settlers, including “price tag” attacks are not classified as terrorism.

“Terrorism is only violence carried out by an enemy within the framework of war against us, and only that justifies taking severe steps who are out of place in normal situations,” he wrote, “all the rest are serious crimes, abominable crime, nationalist crime, but not terrorism.”

In his words, Smotrich referred to the arson attack and murder of a Palestinian father, wife and little child in the village of Duma in the occupied West Bank city of Nablus at the end of July.

“The murder in Duma is not an incident of terrorism, Period,” he wrote. “Whoever calls it terrorism is deviating from the truth, causing mortal and unjustified harm to human and civil rights,” he explained.

Defending the extremist illegal Jewish settlers, who perpetrated the crime, he wrote: “Cheapening the term terrorism, and as a result at the end of the day damaging the effectiveness of the battle against it. We are not in a war against Jews.”

Israeli security arrested a Shin Bet agent over suspicions of taking part in the attack, but refused to sue him, claiming there is not enough evidence against him, released him and only put him under house arrest for five days.

Smotrich criticised this arrest, claiming this would led to a community feeling oppressed. Justifying the terror acts, he said, this feeling would inevitably lead to explosion.

Then, “no one should be surprised when that happens, when more and more people are pushed against their will into acts that they must not commit,” Smotrich wrote.
