Israeli navy kidnaps 14 fishermen off Gaza coast

Days of Palestine, Gaza Strip –Israeli naval forces kidnapped on Tuesday morning 14 Palestinian fishermen off the Gaza coast, seized their boats.

Witnesses said that the Israeli gunboats opened fire at the fishermen before approaching them, kidnapping the fishermen and seizing their fishing boats.

Head of the Syndicate of Gaza Fishermen Nizar Ayyash said that the Israeli navy led the fishermen and towed their boats to the Israeli port of Ashdod north of the Gaza Strip.

On Monday, the Israeli navy opened fire at the fishermen and moderately wounded two of them, and arrested two others.

The Palestinian Centre for Human Rights recorded at least 117 incidents of Israeli occupation forces opening fire at fishermen in the first nine months of 2015, wounding tens of them. The centre also recorded kidnapping of 15 others.

“These attacks occurred in a time where the fishermen did not pose any threat to the Israeli naval troops, as they were doing their job to secure a living,” the centre said.

Despite Israeli pledge to expand the fishing zone following last year’s offensive on Gaza, the limits have remained.

Meanwhile, the over nine-year Israeli-Egyptian, internationally backed, blockade on Gaza has devastated the livelihood of around 4,000 fishermen living in the coastal enclave.
