Italians emigrating ‘in record numbers’

Official figures show that the number of the Italians who emigrated in 2013 hit a ten-year high, as the European country is suffering record high unemployment.

Data released by Italy’s national statistics office Istat on Tuesday showed that 82,100 Italians moved from the country last year, up 20 percent from the previous year and more than double the number recorded in 2007.

Istat said the majority of those who emigrated were aged between 20 to 45, and 30 percent of those who left held a university degree.

According to the statistics office, over half of those who left moved to other European countries, including Germany, Switzerland, Britain and France.

In addition, the findings showed that 44,000 non-Italians moved permanently from the country in 2012, up from the 38,000 registered in the previous year.

The development comes as Italy’s unemployment rate stands at 13.2 percent, the highest level since World War II, and is projected to remain above 10 percent at least until 2017.

The situation for those aged 15 to 24 is even worse, as the country’s youth unemployment rate stands at 43.3 percent.

Italy is also struggling financially. Italy fell back into recession in August for the third time in five years.

Over the past decade, Italy has been the slowest-growing economy in the eurozone as tough austerity measures, spending cuts, and pension changes have stirred serious concerns for many people already grappling with the European country’s ailing economy.
