Jailed Bahraini doctor on hunger strike

Saeed al-Samaheeji, 58, embarked on a hunger strike on Thursday to protest the “brutal and fabricated charges” pushed against him and other doctors convicted on similar grounds.

Samaheeji is one of the nine medical professionals who were sentenced last week to prison terms, ranging from one month to five years.

“We are doctors, not criminals, and we were trying to save lives, and these sentences are political convictions…. We are innocent,” he told reporters.

International rights groups have already condemned the trials, but Samaheeji hopes his hunger strike will draw international attention to the plight of all the convicted doctors, and that their sentences will eventually be thrown out.

Manama says the doctors sided with protesters last year and tried to topple the country’s ruling system.

The doctors, however, argue that they were only doing their jobs during the protests and the subsequent violent crackdown by the Saudi-backed security forces.

Authorities have arrested thousands of protesters, activists, politicians, and medics taking part in anti-regime protests that continue to rock the country.

Meanwhile, protesters have taken to the streets and they say more demonstrations are planned for the coming days.
