Jordan’s Queen Rania Visits Greek Refugee Camp Amidst Abuse of Refugees in Jordan

nsnbc : Queen Rania of Jordan visits the Greek island Lesbos on Monday to meet with refugees there. Meanwhile, Jordan has become notorious for abuse of Syrian refugees and provided bases for Al-Qaeda linked “rebels” since the onset of the war on Syria.

Queen Rania - JordanThe visit of Queen Rania of Jordan is the latest in a string of “celebrity visits” to refugee camps in Greece, following the recent agreement on refugees between the European Union (EU) and Turkey. Last week Pope Francis, the head of the Roman Catholic Church visited the island.

Rania became Queen of Jordan in 1999 and is widely renown for her work related to education, health and community empowerment. Her work with, or rather for children was recognized by UNICEF in 2000 when the agency invited her to become part of UNICEF’s Global Leadership Initiative.

Queen Rania is also known for being social media savvy, and good at “promoting” he causes by using social media. This media savviness may come handy for Queen Rania as refugees, and especially Syrian refugees in Jordan are suffering appalling conditions and abuse.

Jordan has supported bases for Al-Qaeda linked terrorists since the onset of the war on Syria, and in cooperation with the United States Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and the Pentagon’s Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC). Both have their base of operations at the Ramtha Air Base, Jordan.

In 2012 the region around the Jordanian border town of Al-Mafraq was used as a staging area for the invasion of Syria by the so-called “Libyan Brigade”. The 20,000 plus strong brigade consisted largely of fighters organized under the auspices of the Al-Qaeda associated Libyan Islamic Fighting Group (LIFG) under the command of Abdelhakim Belhadj and Mahdi Al-Harati. Two major assaults against Homs resulted in the brigade being quite literally wiped out, inflicting immeasurable suffering on Syrians in the process.

The decisive defeat of the LIFG and associated brigades in June and July 2012 opened the doors for the use of Wahhabi or Salafist – Al-Qaeda linked brigades rather than the use of Muslim Brotherhood – Al-Qaeda linked brigades. The development was documented by the International Crisis Group in its report entitled “Tentative Jihad”.

Among the groups operating out of Jordan was, among others, Liwa-al-Islam, now part of Jaish-al-Islam. Liwa-al-islam and Jordanian and U.S. military and intelligence played a crucial role in the chemical weapons attack in the Damascus suburb of East Ghouta in 2013. Moreover, nsnbc has, since 2012, consistently received reports about forced recruitment in refugee camps in Jordan, not to mention human trafficking, sexual abuse and exploitation of women and minors. A recent report by Siraj Davis documents that Syrian refugees, including women and children in Jordan are, fundamentally, without rights and protection against rights abuses.
