Kofi Annan to meet Russia president, FM

The former UN secretary general arrived in the Russian capital on Saturday.

Annan is scheduled to meet Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Sunday.

Lavrov said in a statement issued on March 20 that Russia is “ready to support Kofi Annan’s mission and those proposals he conveyed to the Syrian side and to several opposition groups and also to the UN Security Council.”

On March 11, Annan said he “presented a set of concrete proposals” to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad during two rounds of talks in Damascus. The former UN chief added the proposals “would have a real impact on the situation on the ground” in Syria.

Meanwhile, Russian officials say Moscow plans to meet with members of the Syrian opposition group, National Coordination Committee for Democratic Change in Syria.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said on Saturday, “We think this organization is no less — and probably more — influential than the Syrian National Council.”

Russia and China have supported a non-binding statement passed at the UN Security Council on March 21 to resolve the year-long unrest in Syria.

Chinese foreign ministry said on Saturday Kofi Annan will also visit Beijing on Tuesday and Wednesday to discuss Syria.

On February 4, Russia and China vetoed a Western-backed draft resolution on Syria at the UN Security Council. The two countries rejected the draft as “unbalanced.”

Moscow and Beijing also vetoed a European-drafted UN Security Council resolution against Syria on October 5, 2011.

The Syrian president said on February 20 that “some foreign countries” are fueling the turmoil in Syria by supporting and funding “armed terrorist groups fighting against the government.” The West and the Syrian opposition, however, blame Damascus for the unrest.

On March 20, Human Rights Watch said armed groups in Syria have carried out “serious human rights abuses” over the past months of unrest that began in mid-March 2011.
