‘KSA merger plan excuse for meddling’

“Regional countries and the UN should show sensitivity toward the issue since this act against Bahrain would provide excuses for interference in the affairs of other Persian Gulf countries,” Mohammad Dehqan, a member of Majlis presiding board said on Tuesday.

He said that other Persian Gulf littoral states would be the next target of interference if regional countries fail to act on the Saudi plan, which would violate Bahrain’s territorial integrity and deprive Manama of its sovereignty.

Dehqan added the plan was against the UN Charter since Bahrain was an independent country, adding that the Saudi plan amounted to violating Bahrain’s territorial integrity and undermining its political structure.

Members of the [Persian] Gulf Cooperation Council ([P]GCC), which includes Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Oman, met in the Saudi capital Riyadh on Monday to discuss closer union among the six countries.

They failed to make any concrete decision on forming a confederation that would initially merge Saudi Arabia with Bahrain but agreed to continue further discussions over the plan, which was put forward by Saudi Arabia.

In December 2011, Saudi King Abdullah called on the council members to move “beyond the stage of cooperation and into the stage of unity in a single entity.”

Saudi Arabia is reportedly seeking to merge with Bahrain in line with plans to unify the six Arab member states of the [P]GCC.

The Saudi plan would give Manama internal political autonomy while Riyadh would stay in charge of the country’s military affairs.
