Labor, Greens to fast-track kids bonus

Labor and the Greens will use their numbers in the Senate to fast-track the government’s school kids bonus through parliament on Thursday.

The government wants its legislation to clear the upper house and become law so it can make a first payment to parents of school kids in June.

Low and middle-income families will receive $410 for each primary school child and $820 a year for secondary students.

The opposition has described the bonus as a bribe unrelated to education and voted against the budget measure in parliament’s lower house on Wednesday.

Families Minister Jenny Macklin says the coalition is out of touch with ordinary families and had used “every trick in the book” to block the legislation.

She rejected suggestions the bonus payments would be spent on things other than their children’s education.

“It’s a real insult to parents to say they don’t know how to look after their kids,” the minister told ABC Radio.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard said the coalition’s stance showed that Opposition Leader Tony Abbott cared more about the rich.

“Mr Abbott, who represents one of the wealthiest electorates in the country, came into the parliament yesterday with his Liberal Party membership ticket in one pocket and used his vote to stop working families getting money they need,” she told ABC Radio on Thursday.

“And his explanations for doing that were just laughable.”

Ms Gillard said Mr Abbott “could not explain” why he supported the Howard government’s baby bonus but rejected Labor’s school kids bonus.

“I believe Mr Abbott is out of touch with working families because only someone out of touch could vote against giving people a helping hand,” she said.

Nationals Senate leader Barnaby Joyce also called the bonus payment a “bribe”.

“It is completely and hopelessly an unadulterated bribe,” he told parliament.
