A Labor backbencher has called on his government to implement the Gonski school funding review “lock, stock and barrel”.
The review, released in February, recommended a complete overhaul of school funding.
It suggested governments spend a set amount per student, no matter what type of school they attended, with top ups to address disadvantage.
The Gonski panel also estimated at least $5 billion extra should be injected into the school system.
Labor member for Blair Shayne Neumann said the report’s conclusions were clear: the current system was illogical, lacked transparency and wasn’t focused on achieving the best results.
“I urge the government to implement Gonski lock stock and barrel,” the Queenslander told parliament on Tuesday night.
He said information from the Australian Education Union indicated schools in his electorate would gain about $1500 per student under the reforms.
“If that’s the case, my electorate would receive considerable assistance by the implementation of the Gonski review,” Mr Neumann said.
He quoted principals of schools in his area, who said the effect would be “truly transformational on our students and our local community”.
The government is working through the details needed to put the changes in place, with Schools Minister Peter Garrett determined to introduce legislation by the end of the year.
Opposition education spokesman Christopher Pyne has previously said a Coalition government would maintain the status quo and not implement the Gonski reforms.
