Li Keqiang appointed as China premier

“I announce that comrade Li Keqiang has been chosen as premier of the People’s Republic of China,” Yan Junqi, a vice-chairwoman of China’s parliament, said on Friday.

Delegates gathered in the Great Hall of the People in the capital Beijing to vote on the appointment of the country’s new premier. Li received 99.69 percent of the votes, which is 2,940 votes out of the 2,949 cast.

Li, a 57-year-old bureaucrat, replaced Wen Jiabao and would run as the country’s premier for five years.

On Thursday, Xi Jinping was named president of China after a vote at the nation’s parliamentary meeting in Beijing.

The appointment comes four months after Xi succeeded President Hu Jintao as the head of the ruling communist party.

Xi was also named chairman of the Central Military Commission.
