LNP boots Hardgrave from party

Former federal minister Gary Hardgrave has been kicked out of the Liberal National Party (LNP).

Now working as a radio presenter on Brisbane’s 4BC, Mr Hardgrave says the LNP made the decision after taking exception to comments he made.

Mr Hardgrave says the party tried to “control” him, suggesting he consult the LNP constitution before his broadcast.

“My brand of commentary is based on my experience and personal values,” he said in a statement.

“The decision of the executive to expel me seems out of touch with the perception many have about my radio commentary.”

Mr Hardgrave said he still had friends in the party from all tiers in government but there’s been a power shift away from the party’s executives in recent times.

“Faceless people within the party organisation have used me as an example as they struggle for relevance,” he said.

“They seem in a parallel universe satisfying themselves of their own importance.”

LNP state director Brad Henderson did not want to comment.

“We do not comment on internal party matters,” he said.

Mr Hardgrave served as Moreton MP from 1996 until 2007, when he was defeated by Graham Perrett.

He also held several ministry positions in the Howard government.
