Lonesome Ray of Sunshine

By John Michael

To walk along the path beset by gruesome Shade –
To climb the gritty hills, Through loathsome ponds to wade.
Travel beneath the trees, black and gnarled by Woe –
Question the Wither’d Hand – That points the way to go!
For ‘neath the gloomy sky with artificial sun,
We labor out our days like an ox with plow to run.
‘Till our days have passed, of toil in this field –
Thankless do we pass as dark Death harvests the yield.
As the owners of the land chomp upon our bones;
Boil up our fat to grease their slimy thrones.
Bloated from their wars, they feast upon our flesh,
To send to brutal field, they yank the babe from breast!
They number every hair upon our weary head,
As would any Shepherd on any flock he bred!
Yet ‘neath the dismal sky, I’ve wander’d as a Ram –
Stiff of neck and stubborn, against the Shepherd’s plan!
Beaten by the cane and ripped by snarling dogs;
Scarred up, torn, and wounded – cut by knife and flog.
To spite their cursed tortures, I did not fall in line,
I broke free of weaken’d fence, in quest of the Sublime.
Yet loose of slavish pasture, I found myself alone –
For few of Kith and Kin can free their minds to roam.
Liberty forgotten, they prefer whip or leash;
They trade in for comfort, their Birthright of Free Speech!
What buck’d I from the start – do they humbly bow;
‘Till the time for slaughter, the fatten’d herd shall plow.
So I roam’d the empty forest they once call’d their home;
‘Neath dark and storm-wrought clouds, I wander’d on alone.
Then a Light found me – it fought through windy squall –
Not upon Damascus road, but from the Wild a Call!
A lonesome Ray of Sun-shine, outcast as was I,
Shin’d through doom upon my breast and caused my heart to ply.
Bringing Reason and a Cause, to fight for and to Live;
Upon this Earthen Altar, my sacrifice I give.
