M4 re-opened as man fights for life after crash

AN 18-year-old man is in a critical condition in hospital after the car he was a passenger in collided with a truck on the M4 at Prospect this morning.

Police said the man was sitting in the passenger seat of a Mitsubishi Mirage that was being driven by his 23-year-old sister when the car crashed about 6am.

The woman is also in hospital in a serious condition.

Police said the Mirage was seen to swerve to avoid another car that was changing lanes as the vehicles approached the Prospect Highway exit.

The Mirage lost control and veered across the road and into an International eight-wheel truck, police said.

An ambulance spokeswoman told a Fairfax reporter that the brother and sister were trapped in the car for about 30 minutes.

The man was unconscious with head injuries, she said. He was taken to Westmead Hospital and is in a critical condition in the emergency unit.

The woman had serious head and chest injuries and was also taken to Westmead Hospital. She is in a stable condition.

The 40-year-old truck driver was uninjured and was taken to Westmead Hospital for mandatory blood and urine tests.

Police said the vehicle that changed lanes causing the Mirage to swerve failed to stop after the accident and they have now publicly appealed for witnesses to help identify it.

The crash closed the eastbound lanes of the M4 for more than two hours — causing major traffic delays — while police investigated the accident scene

Inspector Phil Brooks, from the Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit, said that there would be many witnesses to the incident.

‘‘This crash happened in peak hour traffic, so someone must have seen what happened,’’ he said.

‘‘A young man is currently fighting for his life and a young woman has been seriously injured.

‘‘It is imperative that if you saw the incident or can help with inquiries in any way, you contact the Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.’’
