If you ask Jim Roosevelt, Massachusetts superdelegate and official for the Democratic National Committee, about the concept of superdelegates, he’ll say that he and his fellows “don’t really have super powers” but they do “serve a purpose… [and] have served the party well.”

But voters would say otherwise.

Over the weekend, delegates at the Maine Democratic Party (MDP) statewide convention rocked the political world when Congresswoman Diane Russell proposed an amendment regarding superdelegates.

Russell suggested that democratic superdelegates be allocated proportionally according to the popular vote and this idea passed the MDP with quite a bit of happy cheering because such a thing would “reduce the clout of unpledged elected officials and party insiders”.

The congresswoman said : “We have a system of government where you have one person, one vote, by and large. The primary system is not when that happens. And I think that we need to start moving toward a system that’s more fair, that’s more democratic and more reflective of the popular vote.”

Although this proposal is “nonbinding” for this election season, the 2020 elections are up for grabs.

This would mean that the majority of the 5 superdelegates in the state of Main would have to support Bernie Sanders who won over 64% of the voters during the primary.

Currently 3 of these superdelegates support Hillary Clinton.

In addition to the changes, this amendment calls for the MDP to petition the Democratic National Convention (DNC) to do away with this system all together.

Maine is sending 30 delegates to the DNC; 17 pledged to Bernie Sanders and 8 promised to Hillary Clinton.

While speaking at the MDP, Brigham McNaughton told the crowd about this “rigged system”, insisting: “No one is super. We are all in this together.”

Jon Fishman, former drummer for Phish, commented : “I’ve been to ‘The Land of Bernie.’ I know it’s a wonderful place! I think it’s worth staying in the fight just to get that progressive agenda … just to pull the Democratic Party to the left or to somewhat more progressive stances that Bernie so adamantly represents.”
